Who Are the Expats?
And who are the travelers?
There have been multiple debates over the topic of which nationality prevails among those who came and stayed. Since there's no oficial data and no sociological research ever conducted, we can only judge by our own impressions. Our editorial consensus approves this statistics, sorted from most present to least:

There have been multiple debates over the topic of which nationality prevails among those who came and stayed. Since there's no oficial data and no sociological research ever conducted, we can only judge by our own impressions. Our editorial consensus approves this statistics, sorted from most present to least:
  • Argentinians
  • Colombians
  • USA
  • French
  • Other latinamerican nationalities (Perú, Chile, Venezuela)
  • Russians
Average age of an expat, again according to our editorial consensus, is just below 40. What do all these nice people do? While a big part are digital nomads, most of the hotel owners, if expats, are people from the US and France. Argentinians prevail in the restaurant business. With all that said, there are also Ecuadorians who moved from other parts of the country to live here in the coast, but they are few compared to other expats.
Montañita seems to be dominated by younger Argentinians and Americans, while Olon has more of 40+ crowds from the US. Ayampe is a French sanctuary, also having some expats from the US, who are mostly ladies.
Who's the tourists?
Different times of the year attract different crowds, and since now we are looking into the months of December and onwards let's see whom Montañita and the cost will be hosting.

  • Israelis
If you've ever been to Goa, you sometimes can feel like in Arambol without leaving Montañita. The Israelites you are seeing here are mostly schoolies who passed their exams (mazel tov!) and are now celebrating. The israelite crowds arrive between March and June What attracts them to Montanita is the electronic music vibe, their own community and the financial support to travel that they receive from their government. There used to be a Synagogue in Montanita, in Tigrillo street, but as of 2025 it has reduced to a hotel, named “Synagoga”.

  • Colombians and Argentinians
Argentinian tourists numbers are declining, while the Colombian are rapidly growing, and the roots for this changes are in their home situations. Both nations come mostly to party techno, while many of tourists from Argentina are also coming to surf.

  • French and Germans
Mostly travelling in couples, aged between 20 and 30. French tend to be more into surfing and Germans seem to be more often than others students of short term Spanish language schools.

  • Canadians
There's an increase in the numbers of travellers from Canada and we've met very diverse age spectrum

  • USA
It seems that travellers from the US are more often men aged 35+, and a large part is the army veterans, pow pow. We met many surfing and definitely they make for the most sales of bar drinks.

  • Eastern Europe
These crowds are typically 30-50 years old, some are single male travellers, some are couples. More often than not working in IT remotely. If you happen to talk to those from Russia, don't forget to pressure them on the war topic. While most likely they will be the ones against it or apolitical, it's more than important to remind them of how other nations see the Russian invasion, so that they pressure their relatives and friends back home.
